2022 Ford Expedition: Specs, Price, Pictures, & Update. The biggest SUV in the lineup is not ready for the update. The vehicle debuted a couple of years ago and Ford is delivering only minor changes for the upcoming season. Is that clever, having in mind that General Motors is launching new Tahoe and Suburban? Well, the GM is catching up with the Blue Oval carmaker, whose 2022 Ford Expedition will still be competitive, even with small modifications compared to the current edition.
The most changes we will see inside the cockpit. The company will revisit the interior. Safety and infotainment segments will be upgraded with more advanced features. Features will be reshuffled across the packages. The 2022 Expedition offers plenty of building options. Of all, there are SUVs with standard and extended wheelbase. You choose trim levels. Starting next season, Expedition is going to be available with a diesel engine. More color options will be in the palette.

2022 Ford Expedition Specs, Diesel Engine Joins the Lineup
The 2022 Ford Expedition will be one of the rare full-size SUVs without a V8 engine in the lineup. Still, this is the vehicle with the highest towing capacity in the segment with 9,300 pounds. A V6 is under the hood. Engineers are not maximizing outputs of the 3.5-liter displacement. For the Expedition, it is tuned to create 375 horsepower. For some models, the output goes up to 450 hp and 510 lb-ft. Torque for the Expedition stops at 470 pound-feet. A ten-speed automatic transmission sends power to rear wheels. All-wheel drive is optional and it comes with 9,000 pounds of towing capacity.
The novelty for the upcoming update is a diesel engine. We saw this coming. Chevrolet is also adding a turbodiesel to Tahoe and Suburban, so this is the logical move for Ford. The 2022 Expedition can count on 260 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. We’ll see how it affects the towing capacity. In the truck class, the Powerstroke unit beats Duramax and EcoDiesel engines with more than 11,500 pounds.
2022 Ford Expedition Max, FX4
Ford and General Motors are making special versions of their full-size SUVs. These can become even bigger thanks to the body extension. The 2022 Ford Expedition Max will stand against Chevy Suburban (the same vehicle as Tahoe, only longer) and Yukon XL. This version will add 12 inches of total length and 9 inches on wheelbase. The Max model is 222 inches long, with a 131-inch distance between axles. This means the increase of cargo space to 36 cubic feet behind the third row and up to 122 cu.ft. with all seats folded down. This extension is available for most configurations, and it will cost $3,000.
There are four standard trim levels available for the new 2022 Expedition. Still, the company offers plenty of further upgrades. If you are a fan of off-road adventures, we recommend the FX4 package with special parts for extreme quests. With its features, the Expedition SUV becomes a competitor to Toyota Sequoia, which recently introduced the TRD Pro trim.
Interior, Colors, and Other Changes
The new Expedition will be here by the end of this summer. The company is hiding mostly everything about updates. The SUV is coming in the XLT trim as the base setup. You can upgrade the offer with some of the existing trims (Platinum, King Ranch, Limited), or select options and packages. Either way, there are a lot of possibilities, including a diesel engine, FX4 off-road edition, and long-wheelbase MAX model.
Even the base XLT version comes nicely loaded with features. Every next step is making the interior even more luxurious. Limited edition adds B&O audio, leather seats, and tri-zone climate control. The panoramic sunroof is part of the King Ranch model. Most features come with the Platinum version. Some high-end equipment is making it the most expensive model in the lineup.
The company will update the color palette for the 2022 Ford Expedition. At least ten paintjobs will be there. The base version is going to offer five standard and a few premium colors.
2022 Expedition vs Chevrolet Tahoe/Suburban
The upcoming SUV is facing the same opponents once again. Chevrolet is not more competitive thanks to the IRS system and diesel engine. The independent rear suspension is finally joining the GM lineup, while Ford is taking advantage of this setup for more than ten years. Now, both Tahoe and Suburban will be more capable of the off-road drive. The lifespan will be extended.
General Motors is using a pair of V8 units and a diesel motor is officially joining the lineup. On the other hand, we expect the same move by Ford, but the Blue Oval company is yet to confirm the 2022 Expedition Diesel. Chevrolet will also need an off-road package, similar to FX4. General Motors is delivering cool upgrades with the GMC Yukon AT4. Tahoe’s mechanical twin also offers the premium Denali package that costs more than Expedition Platinum.
